Georgia Rotary Student Program
Academic Year 2009-2010

About the Program
The Rotarians of the State of Georgia, USA, operate a program by granting scholarships to approximately 80 foreign students each year to study for one year in the colleges and universities in Georgia. By using the means of scholarships Rotary is trying to promote international good will through the bonds of friendship and understanding with one another.

The scholarship pays all scholastic costs including tuition, book allowance, college provided room, food, and issues USD 200 twice a year to cover incidental expenses. It DOES NOT cover transportation expenses to or from the United States nor insurance.

Who can apply?
Applicants must be born between August 1, 1984 and July 31, 1991 in order to study in the academic year 2009-2010. That means that applicants must be at least 18 years of age by August 1 or must not have reached age 25 by August 1 the year studies begin. Children of both Rotarians and non-Rotarians may apply. Also, make sure your home area belongs to a Swedish district.

There are certain restrictions. Applicants who are married will not be awarded a scholarship. Applicants who have previously studied in the USA for a period exceeding four months cannot be considered for a scholarship. Also, a good academic result from high school is necessary.

What can you study?
Many schools that provide scholarships are small colleges. Thus, studies are often lead in the introductory level. Studies in the fields of medical science, veterinary science or odontology cannot be offered.

Task of Rotary Club
Applicants must be recommended by a Rotary Club. Rotary Clubs will take no economic responsibility. Their tasks are to judge and to approve at the interview if the applicant is “a person of high ideals, good moral character, superior academic ability, outstanding leadership qualities, and will represent to the Rotarians of the States of Georgia the Ideals of Rotary”.

Selection Procedure
A comprehensive application for the Georgia Rotary Student Program requires a lot of work, obtaining many kinds of documents and taking certain tests (TOEFL and SAT). Therefore, the selecting procedure is simplified in two stages so that not all applicants need to go through the entire application procedure. Rotary in Sweden is requested by the administrators in Georgia to choose 15 candidates first and to send their application forms to USA. Because of this, the preliminary application needs not include all the paper works. The closing date for the preliminary application is August 1, 2008. The papers for the preliminary application are to be returned to the 15 finalists in the beginning of September in order to complete the application with further documents. Those who are not selected will also receive a notification.

The selection will primarily be done based on the final high school transcript. However, academic achievement at university/college and a qualification letter from extra activities will also be referred. A qualification letter describing a good personal quality of the applicant is not as easy to evaluate as an academic transcript. Thus, try to explain and implement your academic performance with this qualification letter if you do not have an excellent transcript from high school. For example, “My final high school transcript is not specifically outstanding. Yet, I signed up for four classes at the Stockholm University this semester majoring economy and received a B-average academic result. I have been very interested in Japan and the Japanese language. Last year, I established the Sweden-Japan Association together with three other youngsters. I am the president of the Association and have been working actively since then.”

Preliminary Application
The application forms can be found on www.grsp.org

First, fill in the form Qualification Summary. Secondly, complete the application form Official Application. For the preliminary application, you will fill in the form from the Section I to IV except II:4 “Tests”. You don’t need to complete the Section V. Enclose the necessary documents such as the final high school transcript. Qualification letters, such as a transcript from your university or a sport association etc, need not be translated to English if written in Swedish. In a case of other language, the qualification letters are to be translated to English. A qualification letter from your teacher should be written in English irrespective of your mother tongue. A photo is not necessary for the preliminary application.
TOEFL and SAT tests are required only for the 15 finalists. These tests are regularly held at certain colleges and universities. The finalists must take the tests before October 31. It is good to find out already now where the nearest test place is from your home.
